A More Sustainable Future in Laboratories

Date of publication: 21. August, 2025

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important topic in scientific and research environments. Laboratories have traditionally been major consumers of energy, water, and disposable materials, creating a significant environmental footprint. In recent years, however, more and more research institutions have realized that it is possible to reduce environmental impact without compromising the quality of work – by using energy-efficient equipment, optimizing processes, and choosing more environmentally friendly materials. One of the key opportunities for improvement lies in laboratory consumables, which are used daily in large quantities.

At Mediline, we believe that sustainability is essential for the future of laboratory equipment and research. That is why, when selecting our partners, we prioritize manufacturers who invest in the development of eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient production processes, and certifications that confirm a sustainable approach. We only work with those who, in addition to top-quality products, also demonstrate a responsible attitude toward the environment.

One such partner is Eppendorf, which is actively committed to developing sustainable solutions for laboratories. Their response to the challenges of modern science includes, among other things, a new line of BioBased laboratory consumables made from renewable resources. The product range includes:

These products are manufactured using recycled and certified raw materials, derived for example from residues and waste oils from the food industry. This reduces the consumption of fossil resources while maintaining the same level of quality that laboratories expect.

Certifications and Responsible Production

BioBased products are manufactured at Eppendorf’s production center in Oldenburg, Germany, which holds an ISCC PLUS certification (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification). In addition, they also carry the ACT label (Accountability, Consistency, Transparency), awarded by My Green Lab®, which measures the environmental impact of laboratory products.

For all products, the following are available:

  • certificates of quality and compliance with standards,
  • lot-specific purity certificates,
  • and an ISCC sustainability declaration.

Even the smallest details matter – for example, the tube caps, which are still made from fossil-based materials, will soon also be replaced with bio-based alternatives.

Working Together Toward More Sustainable Solutions

Collaboration with suppliers such as Eppendorf enables us to offer laboratories solutions that combine top-tier quality with environmental responsibility. By introducing sustainable consumables, researchers can reduce their carbon footprint without changing validated protocols or sacrificing reliability.

A Step Toward a More Sustainable Laboratory

We believe that small but well-considered steps are what lead to big changes. By choosing sustainable materials such as the Eppendorf BioBased portfolio, laboratories contribute not only to their research success but also to preserving the environment for future generations.
